Solo Named To Third Olympic Team
CHICAGO - U.S. Women's National Team head coach Jill Ellis has named the 18-player roster for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil and former Husky Hope Solo is one of seven players making a return to the Olympics after helping the USA to the gold medal in 2012 in London.
Solo, who played goalkeeper collegiately at Washington under head coach Lesle Gallimore from 1999-2002, made the Olympic National Team for the third time in her decorated career. She also was an alternate on the 2004 squad, so she is making her fourth Olypics' trip overall.
The Richland, Wash. native is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and was the Golden Glove trophy winner for most outstanding goalkeeper at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup after helping the United States to the tournament victory. She was a three-time All-American and four-time All-Pac-10 selection while at Washington.
The U.S. will open Group G play on Aug. 3 - two days before the Olympic Opening Ceremony - against New Zealand (7 p.m. local / 3 p.m. PT) at Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte. The USA will stay in Belo Horizonte - which is 270 miles north of Rio de Janeiro - to face France at Mineirão Stadium on Aug. 6 (5 p.m. local / 1 p.m. PT) and finish group play against Colombia on Aug. 9 (6 p.m. local / 2 p.m. PT) at the Amazônia Stadium in Manaus.
