WALES - University of Washington sophomore Carl Yuan continued his stellar play at the 121st Royal Amateur Championship on Wednesday as he advanced to the round of 16 following two wins at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Course in Wales.
Yuan, representing China, made the match play cut Tuesday as he finished 62nd in stroke play and opened the day facing Germany's Christian Braeunig in the first round. He went on to defeat Braeunig 4 & 3 to move on to the round of 32.
His second match Wednesday came down to the wire as it took 20 holes for Yuan to take the victory thanks to a 30 foot par putt giving him the win over Peter Melching from the Netherlands.
Yuan will now face Ivan Cantero (Spain) in the round of 16 on Thursday morning. Should he win, he will play another match Thursday afternoon in the round of eight before the quarterfinals start on Friday.
