UW Advances At Pac-12 Championships
April 21, 2016 | Men's Tennis
OAJI, Calif. – The Washington men's tennis team picked up a big first round win at the Pac-12 Team Championships today against Utah in a 4-3 match at Libbey Park.
“It was another exciting Pac-12 tennis match today,” said head coach Matt Anger. “They all are really, even if the score is 4-0, or 4-1 they're usually much closer than the score indicates.”
The Huskies began the match by winning the doubles point, taking wins on court two and three. Jake Douglas and Gal Hakak were fist to finish, with a 6-3 win over Freddie McGeehan and Egbert Weverink as Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer grabbed a 6-3 win as well on court two. Court one's match was abandoned with Washington clinching the doubles point.
In singles the Huskies and Utes traded points, keeping it a close one throughout. David Micevski of Utah defeated Sommer on court two to tie the match at 1-1. On court six, Lam grabbed the lead back for the Dawgs but it was short lived, as Douglas lost a tough three-setter to Weverink on court four to make the match 2-2.
“I really like Utah's team,” said Anger. “They were missing some guys from early in the season that they have back now. They're a better team than where they are ranked right now.”
With the match coming down to the final singles matches remaining, Mitch Stewart continued his strong play at court one, picking up a big win over Matt Cowley 7-5, 6-3. On court five, Utah brought the game to a 3-3 tie with Parker McGuiness defeating Sebastian Hawken 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Coming down to court three in the third set, Hakak and Dan Little were in a battle, with Hakak coming out on top in a close 6-4 final set to grab the win for the Huskies.
“It was a tough match and a really good win for us to pull out today,” said Anger. “I'm very excited that we get to play California tomorrow.”
The Huskies will face the No. 3 seed in the tournament California tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Libbey Park. Live scoring will be available at Pac-12.com, or can be found by clicking the link above.
