Huskies Fall At Pac-12 Team Championship
April 22, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Ojai, Calif. – The sixth seeded Washington men's tennis team fell at the Pac-12 Team Championships to the third seed California 4-0 today at Libbey Park, eliminating them from the tournament.
“Our guys played really hard today,” said head coach Matt Anger. “I'm very happy with the way they played coming out of the doubles. We didn't get off to as good of a start as I had thought we would since we played yesterday and were used to the conditions.”
The Huskies began doubles play with Jake Douglas and Gal Hakak falling on court three 6-1 to Mads Engsted and J.T. Nishimura. Cal was able to clinch the doubles point with a win on court one, as Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe dropped a 6-4 match to Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat. Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer's match on court two did not finish.
“We were a little more tentative than I would have hoped,” said Anger. “We came out stronger in singles, but unfortunately we weren't able to stay out there long enough on a couple of courts to finish off the matches and make it closer.”
In singles Lam dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to J.T. Nishimura on court six to put the Bears up 6-0, 6-0. To give California the win, they picked up wins on courts three and one, with Hakak and Stewart falling. Sommer won his first set on court two 6-1 and was tied 6-6 as it was called off. Douglas and Sebastian Hawken also had their matches abandoned to bring the final score to 4-0.
“They're a good team and probably a top-16 and host team in the upcoming NCAA Tournament,” said Anger. “I'm definitely proud of our guys, and cannot wait to play more tennis this year.”
The draw for the NCAA Tournament will be chosen by a committee who will begin meeting next week. It will be a 64 team draw with 31 conference winners getting a spot, and the rest going to 33 at large selections. The draw for the tournament will be announced on May 3rd.
