PLEASANTON, Calif. – University of Washington women's golf senior Charlotte Thomas posted a 5-under 67 on day two of the Pac-12 Championships to climb 32 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 13th. The Huskies squad climbed two spots and now sits in a three-way tie for 7th at 5-over 581 (289-292). USC leads the team field at 23-under 553 while Arizona and UCLA are tied for second (10-under 556). Gabriella Then out of USC holds the top spot on the individual leaderboard at 9-under 135, seven strokes ahead of Thomas.
Washington closed the day strong with seven birdies and just one bogey over the final six holes to move up the leaderboard into the three-way tie.
“This team really continues to show their willingness and ability to not give up down the stretch,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “We know our group is capable of some great performances, like the ones that Charlotte and Ying have had this week, we just need to get our collective confidence back. We know what we're capable of doing and hopefully how we ended today will give us some momentum heading into tomorrow's final round.”
Thomas' two-round total of 2-under 142 featured an eight-stroke improvement between Monday and Tuesday and her 5-under 67 was the third lowest round of the day, thanks to five birdies with no errors. The senior, who is one stroke away from the top 10, will look to tie the UW career record of 24 top 10 efforts during the final 18 on Wednesday.
“It was great to see Charlotte respond so solidly today after having a rough day yesterday,” said Mulflur. “She's very capable of those kind of rounds, so we'll see how she finishes tomorrow.”
Fellow senior Ying Luo also sits tied for 13th following her 2-over 74 on Tuesday. Luo closed the day with third birdies over the final nine holes and now has a two-day total of 2-under 142 (68-74).
“Despite a little bit of a rough start with some unforced errors on the second and third holes of the day, Ying really settled in and collected herself and played pretty steady the rest of the day,” added Mulflur. “She really showed that willingness to battle through adversity.”
Freshman Wenyung Keh carded a 2-over 74 Tuesday to move her into a tie for 29th at 2-over-146 while fellow New Zealander Julianne Alvarez is at 7-over 151 following a 5-over 77 on Tuesday to sit tied for 49th. Sarah Rhee rounded out the UW contingent as she sits at 8-over 152 to tie for 51st.
The final day of the 2016 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships at the Ruby Hill Golf Club tees off Wednesday morning at 8:30 as UW will be paired with Stanford.
