Huskies Fall In 4-2 Battle With Oregon
April 17, 2016 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 35 Washington men's tennis team dropped a close battle with No. 41 Oregon 4-2 today at Bill Quillian Stadium, placing their final season record at 16-8 (3-4).
“It's was very disappointing to lose today,” said head coach Matt Anger. “But I'm very excited about the game itself.”
The match began with doubles in close matches on all courts, as court two was the first to finish. Kawika Lam and Enzo Sommer fell to Daan Maasland and Simon Stevens 6-4, with the 30th ranked duo Jayson Amos and Armando Soemarno defeating Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe in a back and forth match. With the Ducks clinching the doubles point, court three's match was abandoned.
In singles the Ducks grabbed the first match on court four, with Jake Douglas falling to No. 124 Amos 6-3, 6-2. Stewart grabbed the point back however, defeating Maasland 6-4, 6-1 on court one, but Oregon responded with a win on court three to move the match score to 3-1.
Needing to win the remaining matches, all of which were in third sets, freshman Sebastian Hawken put the Huskies in position with a win on court five over Cormac Clissold 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. However Kawika Lam lost a tough match on court six to Ethan Young-Smith 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(2). Sommer led his third set 5-4 against Stevens before the match was called off.
“Today was a beautiful day and a great day for college tennis to be on display as it should be,” said Anger. “I didn't like the ultimate result today though and we just came up on the short end.”
The Huskies now move into the postseason, with the Pac-12 Team Championships beginning next Wednesday in Ojai, Calif. You can keep up to date with the team by checking out our website at GoHuskies.com, and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest Husky tennis news and content.
