Duranczyk Leads Washington Past WMU With Two Wins
March 06, 2016 | Gymnastics
Duranczyk, from Sebastopol, Calif., scored a 9.925 on bars and a 9.90 on beam, winning each event. She also took second in the floor exercise, tying her season-best with a 9.85. She'd scored a 9.90 on bars in three of the previous four meets, but bested that Saturday vs. the Broncos. On the balance beam, she easily out-paced her previous high of 9.80, set way back in the first meet of the year to lead the way in the Huskies' best event of the evening. Duranczyk had taken first on bars in three previous meets this season, but Saturday marked her first victory on the beam. On the floor exercise, she held on to a tie for first until teammate Allison Northey edged her with a 9.875 in the final performance of the meet.
"Kait has been a fantastic scorer for us all season long," explained UW head coach Joanne Bowers. "She's been working on specific goals – things to get a little bit better at to get her from a 9.8 to a 9.875 or a 9.9. She's worked so darn hard every single day in practice. It's good for the younger gymnasts to see that when you do the work everyday in practice, you get to see the payoff. It's the little details. It's the landings and the handstands and the sticks."
UW sophomore Joslyn Goings (Phoenix, Ariz.) won the all-around with a score of 39.250. Northey won the floor exercise and Western Michigan's Anna Corbett earned the win on the vault with a 9875.
After very close scores through the first two rotations, Washington pulled away in the third rotation, the balance beam, with all six competitors scoring a 9.75 or higher. Alongside Duranczyk's winning score, Husky freshman Malory Rose posted a new career-best with a 9.875, good for second place. The Huskies had a similar performance in the fourth rotation, the floor exercise, with all six scores at 9.775 or higher.
Washington will have a quick turnaround as the Huskies return to action Monday night at Seattle Pacific. Next Saturday, the Huskies play host to both SPU and Denver in the final meet before the Pac-12 Championships come to Alaska Airlines Arena March 19.
