Huskies Fall In Close Battle With No. 27 UCLA
March 06, 2016 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – In a tough battle with No. 27 UCLA the No. 41 Washington Huskies fell short, falling 5-2 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today.
“Today was a very disappointing loss and everyone is hurting after this one,” said head coach Robin Stephenson. “We had countless opportunities in every singles match except at number one. We have to do a better job of closing out sets and taking advantage of our opportunities.”
The Doubles Dawgs were back at it again, as freshmen duo Tami Grende and Stacey Fung shut out Terri Fleming and Laura Luca 6-0 on court two. On court one, Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi faced off with one of the top doubles teams in the country, in No. 5 Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips. The Huskies rose to the challenge, defeating the undefeated UCLA duo 6-1, giving Kobayashi her second win over a top five ranked duo on the season.
In singles the Huskies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, with Sophia Bott grabbing her second win of the weekend against Luca 6-2, 6-1. The Bruins then tied the match at 2-2 with No. 19 Harrison defeating Abbes 6-2, 6-2 and No. 99 Fung falling to McPhillips 7-5, 6-3.
“This match really comes down to expectations and having the belief to do the right things under pressure,” said Stephenson.
On court four captain Douglas-Miron fell in a close match with Fleming 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) with Alaina Miller defeating Grende in a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 battle to give UCLA the win. Kenadi Hance fell on court five in yet another close match for the Huskies 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to bring the final score to 5-2.
“We have had a tough stretch of matches against very good opponents and we have learned a lot about where we are and what we need to improve upon,” said Stephenson. “The team is committed to learning from these matches and we will bounce back stronger from this.”
The Huskies will be back in action next Sunday as they continue Pac-12 play and travel to Eugene to face No. 28 Oregon. Keep up with the team on our website at GoHuskies.com and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest news and content.
