Scores: No. 8 Washington 12, Boise State 1 (5)
SEATTLE -- The No. 8-ranked University of Washington softball team pushed its win streak to four straight with a run-rule decision in its 2016 home opener at Husky Softball Stadium, rolling past Boise State, 12-1, in five innings on Friday evening (March 4) in the first day of the Husky Classic. It was Washington's sixth run-rule decision of the season. Due to rain, Washington's game against Kent State was postponed until Sunday (March 6) at 1:30 p.m.
Senior Courtney Gano paced the Huskies from the plate, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs scored. The first baseman knocked out her third home run of the season in the second inning. Sophomore Trysten Melhart tallied a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored while senior Dani Braun, junior Casey Stangel and freshman Tannon Snow each recorded two RBI. Much like her first collegiate at-bat, Snow's first at-bat at Husky Softball Stadium was a home run in the first inning.
The Huskies upped their home run tally to 24 on the season, including 10 through the last five games.
Freshman RHP Taran Alvelo earned the victory from the circle, improving to 7-2 on the year with a 10 strikeout, two-hit effort through five innings. Alvelo's 10 strikeouts is a career-high and the most by the staff this season. The freshman did not allow a baserunner or give up a hit until the fifth inning with one-out.
The Huskies scored 11 runs in the first two frames, batting around the order in both innings. In the first, Melhart reached on an infield single and advanced to third on the throwing error. After she scored on an error, Aguilar walked and Gano was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Stangel's two RBI single up the middle then scored two more runs and the Huskies took a 3-0 lead. One batter later, Snow delivered a two-run home run.
Washington recorded six hits and took advantage of Boise State miscues in the second to tack on six more runs. After an error and hit-by-pitch put a pair on, Gano hit a towering three-run home run to give the Huskies a 8-0 edge. An error scored another run and Braun delivered a two-RBI double off the wall to plate sophomore Kelly Burdick and Snow to give the home team an 11-0 advantage.
The Huskies scored their 12th run of the game off freshman pinch hitter Morganne Flores' first career triple, which plated Gano who singled with one-out in the third.
Boise State recorded their first hit and run of the game in the fifth inning. The Broncos reached on an error and one out later, drew a walk. Back-to-back singles then plated their lone run of the game but Alvelo struck out the next two batters to end the game early.
Washington will continue play in the Husky Classic tomorrow (March 5), hosting Kent State at 3:45 p.m. and Pacific at 6 p.m.
