Huskies Run-Rule Kent State, Cancel Game Against Pacific

SEATTLE -- The No. 8-ranked University of Washington softball team used a balanced attack at the plate and solid pitching in the circle to cruise past Kent State, 11-0, in five innings in the second day of the Husky Classic on Saturday (March 5) at Husky Softball Stadium. With the win, the Huskies ran their win streak to five in a row and have now run-ruled seven teams this season. Washington was forced to cancel its second game of the day against Pacific due to rain. The game was tied 1-1 in the third inning.
Washington recorded seven hits in the win against Kent State by seven different batters. Freshman Morganne Flores led the team with three RBI, hitting her second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Ali Aguilar tallied two RBI in the contest, knocking out her seventh home run of the season in the first. Junior Casey Stangel also recorded a pair of RBI.
In the circle, sophomore Madi Schreyer earned the win, tossing her fourth shutout of the season. She allowed four hits with a pair of walks to improve to 5-0 on the season.
Washington took an early 2-0 lead in the first after sophomore Trysten Melhart reached on an error and fellow sophomore Taylor Van Zee roped an RBI double to score her in the next at-bat. Aguilar then homered down the left field line to give Washington a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies tacked on three more in the second. Flores and sophomore Kelly Burdick drew back-to-back walks and Melhart's single plated Flores. After another pair of back-to-back walks scored a run, Melhart scored off a fielder's choice for the Dawgs' sixth run of the game.
Senior Dani Braun led off the third with a double in the gap and she later scored off an error. Leading 7-0, the Huskies scored four more runs in the fourth. Stangel recorded an RBI single before Flores delivered a three-run home run.
Washington wraps up the Husky Classic tomorrow (March 6) against Montana at 11:15 a.m. followed by Kent State at 1:30 p.m.
