Huskies Grab Two Wins In Doubleheader
March 22, 2016 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The Washington men's tennis team was busy today, hosting Eastern Washington for a doubleheader which began at 1:30 p.m. in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. In their last non-conference matches of the season, the Huskies were able to grab two 7-0 sweeps and will enter the Pac-12 season with a 13-4 record.
“It was great to get some good matches in,” said head coach Matt Anger. “The guys are obviously happy that their final exams are done, and even happier that they're back out on the court.”
Game one began with the Huskies sweeping the doubles with Rishabh Raman and Sebastian Hawken leading the charge by way of a 6-1 win on court three. Piers Foley and Wendell Watanabe defeated Eduardo Bringold and Vuk Vuckovic on court one 6-4 to clinch the point, with Jake Douglas and Gal Hakak coming out on top of a back and forth battle 7-5 on court two.
The first match's singles were all Washington, beginning with Raman's 6-1, 6-1 win on court six, and Hakak's 6-1, 6-1 victory on court four. The match was clinched when Foley and No. 68 Mitch Stewart finished simultaneously to give Washington the 5-0 lead.
Playing on court two for the second time this season, Enzo Sommer grabbed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Victor Pereira for his 11th dual match win on the year. On court three, Jake Douglas defeated Vuckovic 6-3, 6-1 to give the Huskies the 7-0 sweep over Eastern Washington in game one.
The momentum from game one carried over into the second as the Huskies never let off the gas pedal. Beginning with singles this time, Kawika Lam put up a big performance and finished first, with a 6-0, 6-0 win on court six over Luke Ness. On court three Sommer grabbed his second victory of the day with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Vuckovic, as Joao Barra finished right behind him on court five with a 6-0, 6-3 win.
To clinch the match Stewart defeated Pereira 6-1, 6-1 and Hawken came back after being down in the second set for a 6-4, 6-4 win over Bringold. On court two, Douglas put up a great performance in the first set 6-2, but was taken to a tie-breaker in the second. He won the tie-breaker 6-4 to defeat Bendjelti for his third total win of the day.
With only three doubles matches left to play, the Huskies looked to complete the double 7-0 sweep of the Eagles. Court three was first to close out as Barra and Raman defeated Bringold and Junichi Minakata 6-0, with the point clinched on court two in a 6-4 win for Lam and Sommer. Up 5-2 on court one, Foley and Watanabe were forced into a tie-breaker but were able to battle it out, winning 7-6 (7-5).
“It was good to get these matches under our belts and we're really looking forward to the Pac-12 season,” said Anger. “As soon as this last ball was hit tonight that's what the guys were talking about. We're eager to get started this Friday, we have two great teams coming in and we can't wait.”
Washington will be back in action at home this coming weekend as they begin Pac-12 play with a bang, hosting No. 12 USC on Friday at 5 p.m., and No. 5 UCLA at noon on Sunday.
