QUERENCIA, Mexico -- No. 29 Washington had a tough day at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Monday, dropping from sixth to 11th after a round of 10-over 294. The Dawgs are now at 11-over for the tournament that includes 15 teams with 12 ranked in the top-35.
"It was just sloppy golf today," said head coach Matt Thurmond. "We made so many bogeys."
The Huskies are now well out of the lead as No.11 Georgia had a spectacular day, firing a 16-under 268 to get to 19-under and lead by eight. No. 30 South Florida who led after round one is now second at 11-under, followed by No. 7 Stanford and No. 34 Baylor who are tied for third at 4-under.
"This course isn't so tough, but can wear you out if you don't have lots of confidence," said Thurmond. "It's easy to get scared and we have a little too much fear in us right now. We certainly hope tomorrow will be better."
The Dawgs were led by Corey Pereira who was the only Husky not over par. He shot a round of even-par 71 that included three birdies and three bogeys. Pereira is now tied for 20th at even for the tournament, seven shots back of the lead that is held by Taylor Moore of Arkansas and Aksel Olsen of South Florida.
Jonathan Sanders was also solid for Washington, firing a 1-over 72. He is now tied for 25th at 1-over, making three birdies and an eagle on the day, but also six bogeys.
Frank Garber was third for the Huskies, but did not make a single birdie for his second round. He settled for a 4-over 75, making four bogeys and is now tied for 56th at 7-over for the week.
In that same tie for 56th is freshman Carl Yuan as he was the final score kept for the Dawgs on Monday with a 5-over 76. He made one birdie, but four bogeys and double for his second round.
Finally, Kevin Kwon was not able to back up a strong first round, firing a 6-over 77 on Monday. He is now tied for 45th at 5-over for the week.
The Dawgs will conclude the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on Tuesday, teeing off at 8 a.m. as part of a shotgun start. Washington will play with Oregon State, Arkansas and LSU as they look to climb the leaderboard.
