BANDON, Ore. – No. 30 Washington battled on a tough day at the Bandon Trails Course of Bandon Dunes Resort, firing a round of 13-over 297 to sit in fourth place. The Dawgs are seven back of the lead with 36 holes still to play.
“Conditions were tough out there today,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “I thought we played alright, but didn't get anything out of it. Soon things will go our way.”
The Dawgs played through nasty wind and rain on day where no team came close to going under par.
No. 9 Clemson leads by one shot over Missouri after a round of 6-over 290. Seattle U. is currently third at 12-over with the Huskies one shot back of that in fourth place. Gonzaga is fifth at 16-over, followed by No. 39 UAB who is sixth at 17-over to complete the top half of a leaderboard that contains 12 teams.
The Huskies got their best round of the day from sophomore Frank Garber, but he was playing as an individual so his total did not count towards the team score. Garber fired a round of even-par 71, making two birdies and just two bogeys for his opening round. He is currently tied for fourth place just two shots back of co-leaders Hayden Buckley of Missouri, Joe Harvie of Seattle U. and Bryson Nimmer of Clemson.
Also playing well and just one shot behind Garber is Corey Pereira who fired a round of 1-over 72. He is currently tied for eighth and was the Dawgs top scorer for the team competition on the day. Pereira made four birdies on the day, including a stretch of three in four holes from 13 through 16, but a double-bogey on 18 cost him an under-par round.
Just outside of the top-10 was senior Jonathan Sanders who shot 2-over 73 and is tied for 11th. Sanders made two birdies and was under par on the front nine, but three bogeys on the back dropped him back to 2-over.
The final two counting scores for the Dawgs came from Kevin Kwon and Carl Yuan who each shot 5-over 76. Both players are tied for 23rd after tough days in the rain and wind.
Jordan Lu rounded out the squad, shooting a round of 7-over 78 and sitting in a tie for 41st.
The Dawgs will be back in action Monday morning at Bandon Trails for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Washington will look to move up the leaderboard as they look to get in contention to win the tournament as they did in 2011. Garber, Pereira and Sanders also look for individual success at a place where Huskies have won three of the past five years.
