BANDON, Ore. – No. 30 Washington climbed two spots on the leaderboard on Monday, firing a round of 1-over 285 to climb to a tie for second place at the Bandon Dunes Championship. The Dawgs are now 14-over for the tournament being contested at the Bandon Trails Course at the Bandon Dunes Resort.
Players were treated to a beautiful day on the Oregon Coast, which improved scoring over the rainy and windy opening round.
"It was nice to play a round when the wind wasn't blowing and the sun was out," said head coach Matt Thurmond. "We've been playing really tough golf lately and that can beat you up."
The Dawgs are tied with Missouri for second place, but 18 shots behind No. 9 Clemson who leads at 4-under after the round of the tournament, a 10-under 274. The Huskies are at 14-over, tied with Mizzou, while No. 39 UAB is fourth at 16-over, followed by Seattle U. who is at 21-over.
"Today was just kind of a normal day," said Thurmond. "Scoring was easier and we played solidly."
The Dawgs got solid play across the board in the second round as the entire team was within two shots of par and the worst scores kept were 1-over 72's.
Corey Pereira led the way, firing a round of 2-under 69 to climb to a tie for fifth. He is currently just two shots behind Stephen Behr and Bryson Nimmer of Clemson and Blair Bursey of Utah Valley who share the lead at 3-under. Pereira made five birdies to just three bogeys as one of just six players on the day to shoot in the 60's.
In that same tie for fifth is Frank Garber who is playing as an individual. Garber shot a 1-under 70, making three birdies and two bogeys. His scores don't count towards the team competition, but is also just two shots back of the individual lead.
The three other counting scores for round two were 1-over 72's, shot by Jonathan Sanders, Carl Yuan and Jordan Lu. Sanders who is a former champion of the tournament is now tied for 13th at 3-over after making three birdies to go with four bogeys.
Yuan also made three birdies and four bogeys and is now tied for 20th at 6-over for the week. Lu is now tied for 32nd after making four birdies, but also three bogeys and the only double made by the Huskies for the second round.
Kevin Kwon was the score thrown out, a 2-over 73. He is now tied for 25th at 7-over after making three birdies and five bogeys.
The Huskies will return to Bandon Trails on Tuesday morning for the final round. Washington will have a lot of ground to make up to catch Clemson, but also has a couple players in contention as a Dawg tries to win the Bandon Dunes Championship for the fourth time in six years.
"Corey and Frank played themselves into contention," said Thurmond. "Clemson played really well and made it tough to catch them, but we'll give it a shot tomorrow."
