February 23, 2016 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, TX – The No. 33 Washington Huskies fell today in a close match with No. 10 Texas Tech 4-2 to wrap up a three day stretch of road matches.
In doubles the Dawgs took the first match on court three as Elianne Douglas-Miron and Kenadi Hance defeated Sabrina Federici and Felicity Maltby 6-3. On court two Stacey Fung and Tami Grende fell in a close 7-5 match to Sarah Dvorak and Alex Valenstein to make court one the deciding match. Tied 6-6, Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi headed to a tie-breaker against Lynn Kiro and Gabriela Talaba where they battled to win 9-7.
“We did a great job to get the doubles point today and got off to a great start,” said Stephenson. “However, we simply got outplayed in most of our singles matches.”
Abbes fell to No. 80 Talaba 6-1, 6-0 and Katelyn Jackson defeated Kobayashi 6-3, 6-1 to put Texas Tech up 2-1. To clinch the match for the Lady Raiders Douglas-Miron fell 6-2, 6-0 on court four and Grende fell 6-3, 6-2 on court three. Fung picked up a win on court two against Sarah Dvorak 7-5, 6-1 before Hance's match on court five was called off.
“Texas Tech is a tough team and showed why they are a top 10 program,” said Stephenson. “This weekend has been so good for the team to see the areas we need to improve before heading into conference play.”
After a busy three day stretch on the road against three ranked opponents the Huskies will take this coming weekend off before beginning Pac-12 play. They will travel to Los Angeles March 4th where they will face USC before playing UCLA the following day.
“We were challenged in many different ways this weekend and learned where we need to get better and tougher, and will get back to work to address those areas before our next matches,” said Stephenson. “We didn't come away with the wins we wanted but we certainly came away with the experience we needed.”
