LIHU'E, Hawai'i – No. 27 Washington finished strong at the John Burns Intercollegiate, firing a final round of 4-under 284 to climb to fourth place. Playing at the Wailua Golf Course, the Dawgs shot their best round of the tournament to finish at 3-over 867 overall.
No. 8 Texas held on for the team title, finishing at 20-under with an equivalent final round to Washington of 4-under. No. 17 California had the best final round of the day, shooting 6-under and finishing second overall at 15-under. No. 42 Texas A&M was the other team under par, placing third at 1-under, while the Dawgs were fourth at 3-over and No. 14 Virginia was fifth at 4-over.
“I thought it was a good bad tournament for us,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “We didn't play great but hung in there and fought hard for a respectable finish.”
Jordan Lu led the Huskies for a second-straight day, firing a sensational 6-under 66 that tied the best round of the tournament. Lu made seven birdies to go with just one bogey on the day as he climbed 31 spots on the leaderboard to tie for 22nd.
“I am so excited for Jordan,” said Thurmond. “It's great to see the big smile and satisfaction that comes with a great round. He's struggled lately so it feels extra good for him and we needed it today.”
Lu opened with an 81, but then backed that up with a 2-under 70 and a 6-under 66 that would have put him contention without a tough first round. Individually, four players tied for the victory at 6-under 210, including Beau Hossler and Gavin Hall of Texas, K.K. Limbhasut of California and Skye Inakoshi of Hawai'i.
The top overall finishers from the Dawgs came from Corey Pereira and Carl Yuan who were in a six-way tie for 12th at 1-under. Pereira shot a 1-under 71 on Friday, making three birdies to go with two bogeys. He played all three rounds at or under par, despite not having his best stuff all week.
Yuan finished with a final round of even-par 72 and also did not have a round over par all week. The freshman made four birdies to go with four bogeys on the day to finish at 1-under overall.
The final score kept by the Huskies was a 3-over 75, shot by both Frank Garber and Jonathan Sanders. Garber made three birdies, but also four bogeys and a double. He finished the week at 9-over and tied for 53rd.
Sanders made just one birdie on Friday to go with four bogeys to finish at 10-over for the tournament. The senior tied for 57th overall.
The Dawgs will now return to campus, before heading out to another exotic location for their next tournament, which begins Sunday, Feb. 28. The three-day 54-hole Querencia Cabo Collegiate will be contested at the Querencia Legend Course in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
