LIHU'E, Hawai'i – No. 27 Washington moved up three spots on the leaderboard at the John Burns Intercollegiate in round two from the Wailua Golf Course. The Dawgs are now tied for sixth at 7-over for the week after firing a second round of 1-under 287.
The Huskies had a solid day, despite not playing their best, as one of five teams under par for the round. No. 17 California had the low round at 9-under, but are still second overall, seven shots back of No. 8 Texas. The Longhorns lead at 16-under after a second round of 4-under, while Cal is second at 9-under and No. 42 Texas A&M is third at 1-over.
"It was a day when we didn't have our good stuff, but we gutted out some ugly rounds," said head coach Matt Thurmond. "I think Sanders only hit three greens in regulation and Corey was all over the place and still shot even."
The Dawgs are part of a tightly bunched middle of the field, but are just six shots out of third place.
Washington was led by sophomore Jordan Lu on Thursday as he fired a round of 2-under 70. Lu struggled in the first round, but bounced back nicely to lead the Huskies from the No. 5 spot. He made five birdies and just three bogeys on the day to climb up the leaderboard into a tie for 53rd.
"I am really proud of Lu for finishing so well today and coming back strong after a tough day yesterday," said Thurmond.
Also playing well and leading the Dawgs on the individual leaderboard is freshman Carl Yuan. He was even-par for the second round, making an eagle and a birdie to go with three bogeys. Yuan is now tied for 11th overall, six shots back of the leader K.K. Limbhasut of Cal who is at 7-under.
"Carl was solid from start to finish," remarked Thurmond.
Corey Pereira is also high on the overall leaderboard after a second-straight day of even-par 72. The Hogan Award candidate did not have his 'A' game, but battled through the round. Pereira is tied for 18th overall after making three birdies and three bogeys on the day.
Bouncing back from a tough first round was senior Jonathan Sanders who shot 1-over 73, despite hitting just those three greens in regulation. Sanders also made three birdies on the day to go with four bogeys. He is now tied for 53rd for the tournament at 7-over.
Finally, Frank Garber played well for much of the round, but took a triple-bogey on the par-five first to spoil his score. He finished with an eagle and two birdies to go with four bogeys for a round of 3-over 75 for a second-straight day. He is now tied for 48th at 6-over for the tournament.
The Dawgs will return to the Wailua Golf Course on Friday for the final round. Tee times will begin at 10:30 a.m., PT, as the Huskies look to continue their upwards march on the leaderboard.
