LIHU'E, Hawai'i – Washington is underway at the John Burns Intercollegiate, played at the Wailua Golf Course on the island of Kaua'i. The Dawgs opened with a round of 8-over 296 and are tied for ninth after the opening 18 holes.
No. 8 Texas stormed to a big lead after the opening round as the only team under par, finishing at 12-under. They are 12 shots up on No. 17 California who is even-par. Tied for third at 2-over are Washington State and Arizona.
The Dawgs are in the middle of the pack in a 17-team field, tied with two other ranked teams in No. 14 Virginia and No. 49 UNLV.
“It's a slow start for us this week,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “We've prepared well and we are playing solidly overall so we'll be fine and plan to come back with a good round tomorrow.”
The Huskies were led by freshman Carl Yuan who fired a round of 1-under 71 and is tied for 10th. Yuan played a consistent round of four birdies and three bogeys and was particularly good on the par fives, playing those in 2-under. He finds himself four shots off the lead of Beau Hossler of Texas, one of the top-ranked amateurs in the world.
Also playing well was Corey Pereira who shot even-par 72 and is tied for 16th overall. Pereira also avoided big trouble, making three birdies and three bogeys. Like Yuan he played the par fives in 2-under to highlight his round.
Frank Garber was the third player for the Dawgs, shooting a 3-over 75, which puts him in a tie for 43rd. Garber made two birdies on the day, but also a costly double-bogey on the par-five 10th to go with three bogeys.
The final score kept came from senior Jonathan Sanders who fired a 6-over 78. The normally consistent Sanders did not make a birdie and made four bogeys and a double. He should be able to bounce back in round two on Thursday to help get the Dawgs back on track.
Jordan Lu was the final Husky to compete and shot 9-over 81 and is tied for 92nd.
Washington will be back in action beginning at 10:30 a.m., PT, for a shotgun start as they again try to tackle the Wailua Golf Course.
