Luo Leads Huskies on Day One of Peg Barnard invitational
February 14, 2016 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – University of Washington senior Ying Luo sits tied for the top spot on the leaderboard as she finished day one of the 2016 Peg Barnard Invitational with a 1-under 70. The 12th-ranked Huskies as a team finished the day in fourth place after posting a 7-over 291, six strokes off the lead.
Oregon holds the top spot at 1-over 285 while No. 3 Stanford is in second (3-over 287) and California sits in third (5-over 289). Washington had a rocky start to the day going 5-over through the first three holes but bounced back and finished the final 15 holes at 4-over.
“Today was just an okay day for us, somewhat frustrating with the tough start that we had,” said head coach Mary Lou Mulflur. “I was proud of how they battled back after that start though. They managed to play a little better coming down the stretch and put us in a good place, just six strokes off the lead. We've got a shot at it and we're just going to have to go out tomorrow and give it our best shot.”
Luo opened the day with a birdie on the par-5 hole one and finished with three more on holes 11, 12 and 18 to tie her with Stanford's Casey Danielson and Oregon's Caroline Inglis and Marcella Pranovia.
“Ying was just really steady with her game today and with her senior leadership on a day like today,” added Mulflur. “She's been really great with that especially with this young group. It would be really nice to see her go out tomorrow and relax, play with freedom and try and get herself a win.”
Washington placed three total in the top 10 as Luo was joined by freshmen Wenyung Keh and Julianne Alvarez, who both carded 1-over 72's to tie for 10th on the prestigious Stanford Golf Course. Keh closed the day with two of her three birdies on the back nine while Alvarez recorded her five birdies over the final 11 holes and three over the final five.
Freshman Sarah Rhee out of Seattle, Wash., finished her round at 6-over 77 to place 36th. After closing the front nine at 3-over, Rhee posted a birdie on the par-3 hole 14 but her double-bogey on 16 and bogey on 18 had her finish the day at 6-over. Rounding out the UW contingent was freshman Clementina Rodriguez who will start day two of the event in 62nd place with her 12-over 83.
Day two of the 36-hole event will tee off at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14.
