SEATTLE – The Washington women's soccer team celebrated the 2016 regular season this past weekend at their annual banquet, honoring players and staff members for their hard work and dedication to the program.
The evening began by thanking all staff involved with the team this past season before dinner was served, followed by the team and LIFE awards. The LIFE Awards are voted on by the team staff, and named after the four columns on the University of Washington campus that were built in 1911 and named Loyalty, Industry, Faith and Efficiency, standing for LIFE.
Junior Rachel Wheeler received the first award of the night, as she was given the Unsung Hero award, followed by the Loyalty LIFE award. Sophomore Dominique Bond-Flasza was given the award for Goal of the Year for her game-winning shot in the 18th minute against Tennessee and was named the Defensive MVP. Senior Paige Serwold earned the Most Improved award, after playing in 14 matches this season and recording her first career assist against Colorado.
Senior captain Havana McElvaine was honored with the Most Inspirational and 101 Scholar Athlete awards, while fellow captain Shannon Simon was honored with the Efficiency LIFE award. After being named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team last month, junior Kimberly Keever was named the team's Offensive MVP, as well as the Player of the Year. The Forward from Manhattan Beach, Calif. started all 20 matches for Washington this past season, scoring four goals, three of which came against conference opponents.
The Rookie of the Year award was given to freshman defender Lisa Jensen, with Lauren Conley winning the Faith LIFE award and sophomore Sam Kokoska earning the Efficiency LIFE award.
