SEATTLE - With less than a month to go in the regular season, Washington has six matches left to pursue a Pac-12 title and a 15th consecutive NCAA tourney appearance. The Huskies, ranked 11th this week, have had win streaks of 10 and seven matches this season, and will look to put a run together through the rest of November, starting this Thursday and Sunday at home against Arizona and Arizona State. Washington will face 25th-ranked Arizona on Thursday at 8 p.m. in a Pac-12 Networks televised match, then host the Sun Devils on Sunday at 11 a.m. with live stream only.
The Pac-12 race has never been so even, so late in the season, as the current standings. Washington, UCLA, Oregon, and Stanford are all tied for first at 10-4. Only twice in league history has the conference champion finished with more than two losses, once with three, and once with four back in 2009. All four teams can say they control their own fate as a 6-0 finish for any would guarantee at least co-champion status.
Arizona is one of three teams with 8-6 conference records still trying to track down the top four and strengthen its tournament resume as well. The Wildcats are ranked for the first time all season, getting the No. 25 spot this week, after they defeated both USC and UCLA last week. Penina Snuka, Arizona's senior setter, was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week this week. She ranks third in the league with 10.46 assists per set and has helped Arizona hit .219 in conference play compared to a .206 mark for their opponents. Senior Kalei Mau is second in Pac-12 play with 4.10 kills per set and Kendra Dahlke is right behind in four with 4.04. Mau had 21 kills in just three sets in the upset of UCLA while Dahlke had 19 kills in the five set win over USC. In the first meeting between the teams in Tucson, Mau had 23 kills, but the Huskies had a season-high 17 blocks and five players with eight or more kills to pull out a four set win.
The Sun Devils will bring a coaching staff quite familiar with the ins and outs of Alaska Airlines Arena, as ASU is coached by 2007 alum Stevie Mussie, with assistant coach and recent Husky Hall of Fame inductee Sanja Tomasevic (2005 grad) and volunteer assistant Tamari Miyashiro, a 2009 grad and 2012 U.S. Olympian and the Husky career digs leader. Arizona State is 2-12 in Pac-12 play, but both of its wins came on the road. ASU lost to both L.A. schools in straight sets last week. Junior Oluoma Okaro served four aces against UCLA and is tied with Crissy Jones for the most aces in Pac-12 play with 14. Okaro leads the team with 2.41 kills per set in conference play and Ivana Jeremic is second at 2.30. ASU is hitting .180 on the season but just .149 in Pac-12 play. The Dawgs won the first meeting in Tempe, hitting .303 as a team and holding the Devils to .074.
