SEATTLE - Two weeks and four matches remain in the Pac-12 race that is not much easier to forecast now than it was sixteen matches ago. But for the eighth-ranked Huskies, one fact is clear: win four straight and raise a Pac-12 banner. But several other teams are thinking similar thoughts, so all that remains is to let the spikes fall where they may. Washington (22-4, 12-4 Pac-12) visits the mountain schools this weekend, taking on Colorado (13-13, 5-11 Pac-12) first this Friday, Nov. 18, followed by a battle with 16th-ranked Utah (19-8, 10-6 Pac-12) on Sunday, Nov. 20. The match with the Buffs will be live on Pac-12 Washington and Pac-12 Mountain, while Sunday's match is a live stream only.
The Huskies sit tied with UCLA once again with 12-4 conference records, with Stanford and Oregon one game back at 11-5, and Utah right behind in fifth at 10-6. The Dawgs moved back up into the top-10 this week at No. 8 after slipping out last week at No. 11, and UW is again the highest-ranked Pac-12 team, followed closely by No. 9 UCLA, No. 12 Stanford, and No. 16 Utah. Washington completed a season sweep of the Arizona schools last week, led by Tia Scambray who had 13 kills vs. Arizona and a career-high 20 against Arizona State, hitting .443 for the week and winning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. Washington now plays three of its final four on the road, yet the Dawgs are 10-1 in true road matches in 2016.
Colorado has had an up and down season with some great victories, but has now lost six of its past seven matches. However, only one of those six losses came in straigt set, as the Buffs went five sets in a loss to UCLA and took a set off Stanford and Oregon, showing they can hang with the leaders in the Pac. Colorado is also 9-4 at home but just 1-9 on the road. Washington swept in the first meeting in Seattle, hitting .365 and posting 14 blocks in just three sets. In Colorado's last match, a 3-2 loss at Oregon State, Alexa Smith had 20 kills to lead the way. Smith is averaging 3.12 kills per set in Pac-12 matches to lead the team, Gabby Simpson adds 2.69 per set, but did not play in Colorado's loss at OSU. Cierra Simpson leads in digs with 4.03. The Buffs have been outhit, .196 to .226, in conference play.
Utah has won its most conference matches this year since joining the Pac-12 with 10, following a road sweep at the Oregon schools last week. The Utes are up to 16th in the AVCA poll and rank fourth in the league with a .255 team hitting percentage. In Pac-12 matches, Utah is second behind UW in aces with 1.13 per set. Junior outside hitter Adora Anae continues to be a frontrunner for Pac-12 Player of the Year, as she leads the league with 4.68 kills per set in league play, and her 16 aces are tied for the most in league matches. Jessie Openshaw has also hit 15 aces in Pac-12 play. Tawnee Luafalemana leads the team with 1.06 blocks per set and Berkeley Oblad is right behind at 1.02. Luafalemana also is hitting .339 for the year. Carly Trueman is another dangerous hitter that had 12 kills and hit .450 against UW in Seattle, but the Huskies hit .295 as a team and came away with the 3-0 win.
