Scambray’s Career-High Leads Sweep Of Sun Devils
November 13, 2016 | Volleyball
SEATTLE – When two backwards knuckle pokes fall for kills, it's probably going to be a good day, and it certainly was that for junior Tia Scambray and her Husky teammates, as Scambray had a career-high 20 kills in just three sets, leading UW over Arizona State 25-20, 25-21, 25-14. In front of 2,446 fans, the Huskies improved to 22-4 on the year and 12-4 in conference play to tie UCLA for first with four matches remaining.
Scambray's previous career-high was 19 kills and that came in a five setter. In a three set match, her previous best was 13 kills, but she had 20 today including nine in the third set alone, and an outstanding .567 hitting percentage.
"I have to give compliments to Bailey (Tanner)," Scambray said. "She was doing an awesome job setting, and she was making every ball one that I could kill. It was a solid game for me, I was pretty happy about it. I come in with the same approach to every game, that I'm there to support my teammates and be someone they can fall back on. I think we're slowly building up and peaking at the right time so I'm really excited to see what's to come in the next few matches."
The Huskies hit .350 overall as a team, with ASU finishing at .225. The Dawgs had a big serving edge with five aces and gave up none to the Sun Devils. UW also had an edge in digs, 46 to 39, and is now 13-0 when leading the digging totals.
Tanner had 37 assists and moved up to No. 9 in UW history in career assists with 2,258, passing Leslie Steinert (1994-95). Junior Crissy Jones was one kill short of a double-double, with nine kills and 11 digs.
"I thought in that third set we took a lot of responsibility for the way we see and the way we move, and that's what we're trying to get here down the home stretch," said Head Coach Keegan Cook. "We are striving for players to accept as much responsibility as they can and get their jobs done."
Scambray had 33 kills over the two wins over the Arizona schools this weekend, hitting .443 for the week. The junior recently surpassed 1,000 career points, now with 1,036.0 and is up to 836 career kills.
"What an outstanding match for her," said Cook. "She hasn't stopped working all season. She hasn't had a match like this all season but her approach to the game has not changed. She comes to work every day. So really happy for her, she deserves it, she played outstanding and has practiced outstanding all year."
After a couple Sun Devil service errors got UW on the board, the Huskies scored their first kill on a Bailey Tanner dump. Kara Bajema had a kill on a slide and then Tia Scambray followed with a back row kill to the sideline as the Huskies grabbed a 6-3 lead. Avie Niece got her first kill followed by a block from Niece and Jones. A Tanner serve was freeballed over to UW and Crissy Jones put it away in transition for a 9-4 lead as the Huskies forced an ASU timeout on a 5-1 run overall. The Devils got two back out of the break but Schwan hit one down from the 10-foot line for 10-6. Scambray put away a Schwan set in transition for 12-7 Dawgs. Bajema and Tanner blocked down an ASU swing to keep the 14-9 edge. Arizona State earned three straight points to cut it to 14-12 and UW used its first timeout. Bajema and Tanner ended a long rally with a stuff out of the break for 15-12, but ASU pulled within a point before making a hitting error. The teams went back and forth with UW going up two, and ASU getting back within one, as Schwan and Scambray had kills during the stretch. Scambray had a solid pass and ran around to hammer the Tanner set for 19-17 and then UW scored off some strong defense to get back to a three-point lead at 20-17. An ASU error in serve-receive made it 22-18 Dawgs and ASU used its final timeout. ASU got the next two points for 22-20, but the Dawgs got the sideout as Schwan hammered hard off the block and out. UW then reached set point on a block by Tanner and Niece, and Niece finished things off with a third-straight point, hammering a quick set in the middle for 25-20. Scambray was outstanding in the set, putting away six kills on seven swings without an error for a .857 attack percentage, and UW hit .364 overall as a team.
Early in set two, Scambray punched a ball backwards over her head on a second contact and it fell at the back of the court for a kill. Scambray then rotated back and served the first Husky ace of the match for a 3-2 lead. The Huskies had a 3-0 run to go up 8-5 on a Jones kill, an ASU attack error, and a Scambray blast from Tanner. But ASU answered right back with a 4-0 run of its own to retake the lead, blocking UW twice. ASU pushed the lead to 10-13, but the Dawgs picked things back up starting with a Scambray crosscourt kill followed by another Scambray ace. The Devils missed one wide and then Bajema had a kill after ASU freeballed the Scambray serve for a 14-13 Husky lead. A perfect Schwan pass led to a Jones tip kill from the back row for 16-15, then ASU shanked a swing for another UW point and ASU called timeout. Schwan dropped a short serve to the floor for an ace and 20-16 prompting the last ASU timeout. Bajema and Jones had kills to get the Huskies to set point at 24-19. ASU saved a couple but Bajema finished a slide in serve-receive to end it, 25-21. The Huskies hit .231 compared to .226 for ASU but had the three aces to make a big difference. Bajema killed all three of her swings in the set and Scambray had five more.
Jones opened the third set with a swing from the middle off the defender's and out long, and then a Schwan dig led to a Scambray finish for the second point. Jones had a kill off the block from the right for the 3-0 start. There was a sense of déjà vu when Scambray poked another second touch backwards and again it fell on ASU's side for the kill and a 5-1 lead to force the early Devils timeout. Scambray ripped her 15th kill up the line to make it 7-1, but just when UW looked to blow it open, the Sun Devils got back into the set with a 4-0 run for 7-5 before Scambray put another away to end the streak. Kameron McLain checked into the match for the first time and had a serve-receive that led to a Schwan kill for a 11-7 lead. McLain then ended one of the longest rallies of the year on a point that changed sides more than 10 times. Tanner had a diving punch dig to lead to another Scambray kill through the block as the Huskies extended the lead to 14-8. The 18th kill from Scambray went off the ASU block and down for 17-10 Dawgs and ASU used its final timeout. Scambray set her new career high with her 20th kill, hammering out of the back row for 21-14. Jones and McLain then teamed for a block assist on the right pin for 22-14, and Tanner followed that with an ace as UW was pulling away. McLain tipped down to reach match point, and then Schwan converted from the left pin on the next point to cap the sweep, 25-14. The Dawgs had their best hitting of the match at .415 in the third, with Scambray taking care of nine more kills in the third set alone, and Jones collecting eight digs.
Washington will make the trek to the mountain schools next week, heading to Colorado first for a 7:00 p.m. start next Friday, Nov. 18. Then it will be on to Salt Lake City for a Sunday noon battle with the Utes.
