TULSA, Okla. – In his final day of competition at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships, Mitch Stewart picked up one more win in the consolation singles bracket before falling in the quarterfinals.
"It seemed like a struggle all day for Mitch today and he kept fighting," said Washington head coach Matt Anger. "He dug deep and came back from 4-2 down in the 3rd against Diogo Rocha and thought he could do it again, but Andre Goransson was too tough."
In his first match, Stewart defeated Rocha from the Univeristy of Denver 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. He matched up with 17th ranked Goransson of California next, but ended up dropping the match by a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Stewart initially qualified for the main draw by grabbing three straight wins in qualifying, where he was defeated in his first match. In the consolation bracket however, he grabbed two wins, highlighted by a 6-4, 6-7(6), 7-5 win over No. 27 Nick Crystal yesterday.
"We leave for the regionals on Wednesday, but it will be great to have the whole team back together," said Anger.
The team will be in Berkeley, Calif. next for the ITA Regional Championships, where they will be from Thursday October 13th to Monday the 17th. You can keep up with the team by following us on Facebook and Twitter, and checking in on the team's website at GoHuskies.com.
