No. 7 Huskies End Long Trip With Sweep Of Cal
October 28, 2016 | Volleyball
BERKELEY, Calif. β Completing a demanding stretch of four road conference matches over an eight-day span, the Husky volleyball stepped up with a business-like 3-0 win over California (8-13, 2-9 Pac-12) tonight at Haas Pavilion, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19. No. 7 Washington had a balanced attack with four players finishing with seven or more kills, and a double-double from setter Bailey Tanner with 34 assists and 10 digs.
Β
The Huskies improved to 19-3 on the year and bounced back quickly from a loss on Wednesday at Stanford which had broken a seven-match win streak. The Dawgs improved to 9-3 in Pac-12 play and assured themselves of no worse than a tie for first in the conference standings when play finishes up this weekend. The Huskies outhit California, .272 to .156 and surrendered zero aces to the Bears. Washington finished with nine blocks to four for Cal, while Cal had a small edge in digs, 51-45. The Dawgs completed the season sweep of Cal and have won nine straight over the Bears.
Β
Washington went 3-1 on its trek, getting road wins at the Arizona schools last week, then splitting in the Bay Area. The team now will rest up over the weekend, returning home to host the Oregon schools starting with the Ducks next Friday at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Β
Freshman Kara Bajema and junior Tia Scambray both found their targets with regularity tonight. Bajema had eight kills and just one error on 12 swings for a .583 attack percentage, while Scambray had nine kills and just one miss on 22 swings to hit .364. Junior Courtney Schwan had a team-high 11 kills, hitting .267, and junior Crissy Jones added seven kills, eight digs, and five blocks. Freshman Shayne McPherson had a great night serving, as she had all three of UW's aces, and she put up 11 digs.
Β
Schwan started the Dawgs off with a kill on her first swing. A couple Cal ball control errors made it 3-1. Avie Niece tipped for a kill and then Shayne McPherson drove an ace for a 5-2 edge. Jones and Bajema picked up the first Husky block of the match and McPherson then lined a second ace for 7-2 and the Bears took the first timeout. Jones put the Bears in trouble with a float serve and Bajema killed a free ball on a slide for 9-3. A tip by Schwan had it at 11-5 Dawgs. Scambray ended a long rally with a kill out of the back row, and then Jones stuffed a Bears swing on the right. A Cal swing wide and a Bears double had it at 15-6 to cap a 4-0 Husky run. The Bears cut a couple points off the lead, but Niece tipped for a kill and then the Bears hit wide to get it back to 18-10. Bajema then turned a Cal swing down for a stuff and a 19-10 lead to prompt the last Cal timeout. Bajema's third slide kill of the set made it 21-13 as UW kept pushing along. Schwan tipped for one and then slammed a second on the left from Tanner, and then Scambray hit out of the backrow to get to set point at 24-15. The Bears saved a few, but Niece hammered a quick set down in serve-receive to end it, 25-18. The Huskies hit .244 in the set and held Cal to .167, with Schwan notching five kills, and Tanner setting 12 assists with five digs.
Β
The Huskies got out to a similar fast start in the second set, and another ace from McPherson got UW an identical 5-2 lead. Tanner went over on second contact for a kill and a 7-3 lead. Tanner then found Schwan for a kill and a Cal error made it 11-6. The Bears then got their offense going, and won seven of the next eight points to tie and then take a one point lead at 12-13, with UW calling a timeout during that lull. A Cal error broke the run, and then UW went right back up, 14-13, on a Scambray finish. Scambray put down another and then Tanner and Bajema teamed for a stuff for 16-14. Bajema killed a Cal overpass for 18-15 and the Bears called timeout. Kills by Bajema and Schwan got the Dawgs to 20-17, but then Cal rattled off the next three points to force a Husky timeout at 20-all. Cal took the lead on a block out of the break, but Schwan leveled it back at 21 with a kill from Tanner. Cal had a swing to go up two after UW sent over a free ball, but Jones and Niece were there to stuff it back down for 22-22. Tanner had a couple digs on the next rally, and Schwan then set Scambray who lasered one up the line for 23-22 and Cal took timeout. The Bears tied it in serve-receive out of the break, but Scambray converted again through the block to get to set point at 24-23. Cal got a solid pass and tried to run the slide, but Scambray and Bajema tracked it and blocked it right back down to slam the door closed on the set, 25-23. A .364 attack percentage helped the Huskies get the win in the second, with five more kills from Schwan, while Bajema killed all three of her attempts, and Scambray was 4-for-8 for a .500 mark in the set.
Β
Jones shut down another Bear swing for her fourth block assist, and then Scambray went high hands in transition for a kill and a 3-1 lead to start the third. A 3-0 Husky run on a Jones finish, and two straight Bears hitting errors made it 6-2 Dawgs. Tanner back set another slide kill for Bajema to make it 8-4. Jones smacked a pipe set from Tanner to the seam for 9-5. A three point run from the Bears got them back within a point but Jones tipped from the back row for 10-8. The teams traded sideouts for several points, with Jones delivering a rocket from the right off a bump set from Tanner for 13-11, and then Scambray dug up a ball at the net and then circled around to spin a kill to the sideline for 14-11. The Huskies held a 15-13 lead at the media timeout, and then came out of the break with a big roof from Tanner. Some tough serves from Scambray produced a couple consecutive Bear errors and forced a Cal timeout at 18-13. The Bears hit into the antenna out of the break to keep the run going before Cal's setter dumped for a kill to snap the run. Bajema terminated another slide and Cal shanked one long for a 21-14 lead. The Huskies made a couple hitting errors, and then shanked a pass, but Scambray bailed them out by swinging from the back row and putting it down in front of Cal's back line for 22-16. A marathon rally, including a running block cover by McPherson, was finally ended by Niece in the middle for 23-18, forcing Cal's last timeout. A tip from Carly DeHoog went down to get the Huskies to match point at 24-19, and the Bears missed wide on their net swing to bring things to a close, 25-19. Washington held Cal to just .042 in the third set, while Jones got her offense going with five kills on nine swings.
