SEATTLE - After a quick pit stop home in Seattle, the Huskies are repacked and ready for their third and fourth road matches over an eight day span. The second half of Pac-12 play begins in the Bay Area on Wednesday night, as the seventh-ranked Dawgs take on 17th-ranked Stanford in a nationally televised match on the Pac-12 Networks, starting at 7 p.m. Friday, the road trip concludes in Berkeley with an 8 p.m. match against the Cal Golden Bears.
Washington has won seven straight matches to finish the first half of Pac-12 play at 8-2 and with a one game lead in the standings. The last loss before the win streak came in the first meeting with Stanford in Seattle, in a see-saw five setter. The Huskies will look to even the season series with the Cardinal and keep their undefeated road record intact, as UW is now 13-0 away from home and 9-0 in true road matches after victories last weekend at Arizona State and Arizona. Stanford's Maples Pavilion has been the toughest road challenge over the years, as the Huskies have not won there since 2007.
Stanford is 6-4 after splitting its Los Angeles road trip last week, losing in four sets at UCLA but then sweeping USC. The Cardinal have led the NCAA in blocks most of the season, and still lead with 3.43 per set. Three Cardinal are in the top-10 in blocks per set in the Pac-12, with Inky Ajanaku leading at 1.60, Audriana Fitzmorris ranking fourth with 1.46, and Merete Lutz ranking eighth with 1.19. Stanford's .261 attack percentage is third in the Pac-12, with Ajanaku's .379 percentage second-best individually in the league. Ajanaku, the senior All-American middle blocker, ranks second on the team with 2.68 kills per set, while freshman Kathryn Plummer leads the team with 2.71. Fitzmorris and Lutz both also average over 2.30 kills per set in a balanced attack. Freshman libero Morgan Hentz is fourth in the league with 4.50 digs per set.
The Huskies will look for a season sweep against the Bears, after winning in four sets in Seattle in the first meeting. Cal lost its first five Pac-12 matches but has been playing better of late, going 2-3 in its past five matches with wins over Colorado and Arizona, to sit at 2-8 in conference and 8-12 overall. Christine Alftin leads Cal in Pac-12 play with 2.84 kills per set and had 22 kills and hit .450 in Cal's last match at UCLA. Senior setter Alyssa Jensen is currently third with 10.33 assists per set and senior libero Maddy Kerr is sixth with 3.97 digs per set. In Pac-12 matches, the Bears rank eighth with a .200 attack percentage but are last in opponent attack percentage, allowing a .294 mark to opponents.
