
USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Awaits UW

SEATTLE – After finishing up play against top competition at the Wolverine Invitational this past weekend, the Washington women's tennis team gears up for the best in the west as they travel to Palo Alto, Calif. for the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships from Friday October 21st, to Tuesday the 25th.
This weekend, the Huskies will be competing with players from host-school Stanford, California, Cal Poly, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Seattle, UC Davis and Washington State.
Last season the Dawgs grabbed some big wins at the ITA Regionals, highlighted by sophomore Tami Grende who reached the semifinals in singles after defeating No. 33 Denise Starr of California 7-6(7), 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The doubles team of Miki Kobayashi and Grace Ysidora also made a semifinals run, winning four matches in a row, while Elianne Douglas-Miron reached the singles round of 16.
Sophomore Stacey Fung, who holds a singles ranking by the ITA, has grabbed two wins so far in this young season, both coming last weekend at the Wolverine Invitational. In doubles, No. 13 Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi lead the way for UW, having already defeated a ranked opponent at the ITA All-American Championships, grabbing an 8-6 win over the fifth ranked pair in the country.
Friday morning will begin at 9 a.m. with the first two rounds of singles and the opening round of doubles. On Saturday two rounds will be played of singles and doubles each, setting up the quarterfinals to be played on Sunday. The semifinals for both singles and doubles will be played on Monday, with the final matches set for Tuesday morning.
