October 16, 2016 | Women's Tennis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – In the final day of the Wolverine Invitational the Washington women's tennis team played singles against Princeton and finished up the tournament with doubles against the host, Michigan.
"We got out of the weekend what we set out for," said Washington head coach Robin Stephenson. "That was to play a lot of matches at a high level and learn a lot about the team and the areas that we really need to focus on moving forward this fall."
Against Princeton, sophomore Stacey Fung picked up a win over Katrine Steffensen 7-5, 6-2 and Alexis Prokopuik won in a three-setter over Caroline Joyce. Freshman Katarina Kopcalic defeated Tiffany Chen 6-4, 6-4 with the remaining Huskies dropping their matches in singles.
"We played some top competition in the country with the other three teams," said Stephenson. "We competed well all weekend and gained valuable experience that will definitely help us."
In doubles, UW faced the highest ITA ranking at the tournament, with Fung and Lana Slavica falling to No. 4 Mira Ruder-Hook and Brienne Minor of Michigan. Kenadi Hance and Prokopuik also dropped their match against Chiara Lommer and Alex Najarian 6-3.
"Since this was our first event of the fall we tried some different doubles teams and gave different girls opportunities in singles and doubles every day," said Stephenson. "There are a lot of positives from the weekend and we are looking forward to getting back to work and then competing at regionals next weekend."
Fung lead the Dawgs this weekend with three total wins, two in singles and one in doubles, while two Huskies grabbed two wins each, Tami Grende and Prokopuik.
The Huskies will return home this week for practice before heading down to Palo Alto, Calif. for the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships, hosted by Stanford.
