UW Still In Main Draw At USTA/ITA Regional

BERKELEY, Calif. – With weather forcing matches on Friday night to end after midnight, the Washington men's tennis team finished up a long day two, and continued onto day three today at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional.
The Huskies began yesterday off right in doubles, with all four duos picking up wins to advance to the round of 16. The sophomore team of Enzo Sommer and Kawika Lam defeated Oliver Poysti and Paul Giraud of USF 8-4, while Amit Batta and Mitch Stewart grabbed an 8-4 win over fellow Pac-12 duo David Wilczynski & William Geneson of Stanford. Foley and Watanabe won 8-2 in their match, with Gal Hakak and Jake Douglas defeating a duo from California 8-6.
In the singles main draw, three Huskies remained, each with tough matchups. 68th ranked Stewart faced Bjorn Hoffman from California, unable to grab the close first set before falling by a final line of 7-6(3), 6-3. Matched up against Stanford's, Brandon Sutter, Sommer was unable to grab the win in his match as well, falling 6-3, 6-3. After falling 7-5 in the first set of a marathon match with James Wade of UC Davis, Hakak won the second 7-5 before dropping the third 6-1.
On day three today, four duos remained in the main draw for doubles in the round of 16 with one advancing to the quarterfinals as Stewart and Batta defeated Bryce McKelvie and Wade of UC Davis 8-3.
"Amit Batta continues to impress," said head coach Matt Anger. "Him and Mitch are working well in doubles together and we're hoping to keep it going tomorrow."
The remaining Husky pairs in doubles were eliminated from the main draw, each in close matches, leaving Stewart and Batta as Washington's remaining participants.
Quarterfinals for doubles will begin tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., where the Dawgs will face Andre Goransson and Billy Griffith of California, with the semifinals beginning an hour later.
