Huskies Upset No. 12 Texas
January 17, 2016 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The Washington men's tennis team grabbed a huge upset over No. 12 Texas today, with a 4-3 victory at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Longhorns took the doubles point to begin the match, picking up wins on courts one and two. Jake Douglas and Wendell Watanabe fell to George Goldhoff and Julian Zlobinsky 6-2, with Piers Foley and Enzo Sommer falling shortly after 6-4 to Michael Riechmann and Adrian Ortiz. Kawika Lam and Mitch Stewart did not finish their matchup on court three.
“Today was great, it was a very close match like we had Friday night,” said head coach Matt Anger. “I was really surprised all matches were straight sets, usually in a close match like that matches are going to go to three sets but it just seemed to work out that way today. Within all of those matches however it was still really close.”
Singles began with No. 84 Stewart grabbing his fourth singles victory of the season on court one, defeating George Goldhoff 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Sebastian Hawken was next to finish on court five, getting the straight set victory 6-3, 6-2. No. 122 Gal Hakak grabbed a big win over the 94th ranked Harrison Scott on court two 6-3, 6-3, as Piers Foley fell shortly after to Colin Markes 7-5, 6-4.
With the Huskies leading 3-2, all attention turned to Enzo Sommer on court four, as he faced No. 114 Michael Riechmann in a back and forth match. Grabbing the 7-5 first set and up 5-4, the freshman served to win the final set and clinch the Huskies upset. No. 121 Jake Douglas fell in his match against Ortiz to close out the day 7-6, 7-5.
The victory over the No. 12 Longhorns marks the highest ranked opponent defeated for the Dawgs since February 17th in 2013 when they defeated No. 11 Florida.
“We were able to play a lot of freshmen today, and even two sophomores,” said Anger. “So it was just a great win for the team, and also a lot of fun for those guys to get that great experience.”
The Huskies will remain in town yet again next weekend, as they face East Tennessee State on the 22nd, and Pennsylvania on the 24th.
