SEATTLE – The Huskies began their regular season with a doubleheader against Seattle today at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, grabbing two 7-0 wins over Seattle.
Match number one against the Redhawks began with the Huskies sweeping doubles as Kawika Lam and Mitch Stewart defeated Michael Schoettler and Matt Alderson 6-1. Jake Douglas and Wendell Watanabe defeated John Stormans and Connor Leahy 6-4, while freshmen duo Piers Foley and Enzo Sommer came out on top of a tight one against Tanner Berkabile and Matt Alderson 7-5.
In the first round of singles Foley and Rishabh Raman won their matches early, Raman defeating Alderson 6-1, 6-0 and Foley defeating Leahy 6-0, 6-1. No. 84 Mitch Stewart got the win against Seattle's John Stormans, while Enzo Sommer defeated Ian Clare 6-3, 6-1. Jake Douglas got the win on court two against Tanner Berkabile 6-2, 6-2 and Sebastian Hawken won a marathon match against Schoettler 6-4, 2-6 (10-8).
“It was great to get started tonight,” said head coach Matt Anger. “We have plenty of things to work on and it was a blast to get our freshmen in action. “They did some good things, but they were up and down. They showed a lot of great things in the end and are going to keep getting a lot better, as well as the whole team and I'm very excited.”
Game two began with singles as No. 122 Gal Hakak swept Stormans 6-0, 6-0 and Hawken won 6-0, 6-1. Raman and Barra each grabbed a win, Raman defeating Clare 6-1, 6-1 and Barra defeating Alderson 6-0, 6-1. Kawika Lam picked up his first career dual match singles win against Schoettler 6-4, 6-2, with Stewart getting his 7th singles win of the year against Berkabile 6-1, 6-2.
The evening concluded with doubles as Sommer and Foley fell to Berkabile and Stormans 6-4 in a close match. The Huskies picked up the last point though as Lam and Watanabe defeated Alderson and Leahy 6-3, and Hakak and Hawken defeated Brian Nguyen and Jeremiah Kalmus 6-2.
