Northey Wins All-Around In GymDawgs' Opener
January 10, 2016 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – Senior Allison Northey took first place in the all-around and junior Kaitlyn Duranczyk won the bars title as UW gymnastics completed its first meet of the season against the Ohio St. Buckeyes at Alaska Airlines Arena.
“Allie and Kait have been our true captains and leaders, every day in practice, in every competition, and they were really able to rise to the occasion today and show that leadership,” head coach Joanne Bowers said. “I think our younger gymnasts will look up to that. With their leadership I know we are going to be in a good spot.”
The Huskies' highest score came on their last event, as the floor lineup combined to post a 48.800. Overall, the Buckeyes came out on top with a 194.275 to a total of 193.725 for the Huskies.
“I have such mixed emotions. We had higher expectations going in, because we see how we compete in the gym and we didn't show how good we are, specifically on bars and beam,” Bowers said. “We had some good individual performances, and I was really proud of how we turned it around and did so well on floor.”
Northey was a steady performer throughout the evening, posting team-high scores in two events and winning the floor title with a 9.875, the highest score given out at the meet.
“I think it's important to show the younger girls and guide them, to be a good example of how to stay calm under pressure and how to deal with the lights of competition,” Northey said. “It's a different mind frame. I'm just trying to lead by example and help them in any way that I can to be comfortable competing.”
