
One Big Inning Lifts BYU Over Washington

PROVO, Utah – BYU scored late in the game Thursday afternoon to pick up a win over Washington, breaking open a one-run contest with a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Huskies, 7-3.
Four members of the Husky pitching staff saw action with sophomore Kristin Cochran getting the start, throwing two innings. Senior Hailey Bator, sophomore Kirstyn Thomas and junior Casey Stangel also saw time in the circle.
Washington took the game's first lead with a two-out RBI single by Stangel after a BYU error in the top of the first, but the Cougars battled back immediately with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning.
The Huskies tied the game in the second, taking advantage of back-to-back one-out singles by sophomore Julia DePonte and freshman Tannon Snow. One out later, DePonte tied the game, scoring off senior Dani Braun's RBI single.
After BYU took the lead back with a run in the fourth, the Cougars hit a leadoff home run in the fifth and went on to score three more, taking advantage of a Husky error and a pair of singles.
Trailing 7-2 in the seventh, Washington scored a run, but the Cougars escaped the inning to hand Washington its first loss of the fall season.
