No. 10 Washington Downs UC Davis, 3-0
August 31, 2015 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE – Washington made it a weekend sweep, knocking off UC Davis on Sunday night under the lights, 3-0. The Dawgs dominated play from the beginning, outshooting the Aggies 16-8 and taking all 10 of the game's corner kicks.
The Dawgs controlled possession for most of the game and were dangerous on the attack throughout the match.
“It was the most controlled our attack has been,” said head coach Jamie Clark. “In the two exhibition games we were frantic and today we settled the tempo. We worked really hard, but we just settled and got the ball.”
The Dawgs got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute when Luke Hauswirth drew a penalty kick. The redshirt freshman carried his dribble from the right back position and was taken down as he entered the penalty area. James Moberg was given the assignment of taking the penalty and calmly converted from the spot.
The Moberg penalty would be the only goal of the first half, but the Huskies would not sit on the lead long after the break. Washington made it 2-0 just 3:45 into the second half when Beau Blanchard set up Josh Heard for a goal. Blanchard received the ball just over the midfield line spinning away from a defender and then playing a diagonal ball to Heard who was streaking toward goal. The senior forward beat the last defender and scored his first goal of the season and 13th of his Husky career.
Just five minutes later, the Dawgs would put the game out of reach, scoring on a corner kick. Justin Schmidt sent in an inswinging corner kick that David Coly flicked from the near post across the goal. Quentin Pearson was there to slide and knock the ball right to Michael Gallagher who slammed home the goal from in front of net.
Washington continued to press forward, almost adding a fourth goal when Kyle Coffee nearly beat the UC Davis goalkeeper and then Steven Wright could not finish the rebound, sailing it high.
The Huskies would settle for the 3-0 victory, while also securing the second clean sheet in as many games.
“The defense has been very solid,” said Clark. “We learned a lot in our exhibition games when we gave up goals. They learned just playing on the safe side and being very sensible about decision making and when to play big and take chances. They're doing a great job.”
Ryan Herman earned his second shutout of the season in goal, making three saves, although he was never truly tested.
The Dawgs will now head out on the road for the first time, traveling to Philadelphia to face Pennsylvania and Drexel. Washington takes on the Quakers on Friday, Sept. 4 at 4:30 p.m., PT, followed by the Dragons on Monday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m., PT.
