EUGENE, Ore. – A fantastic 2015 season came to a close for junior Izaic Yorks in the finals of the 1,500-meters today at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, with Yorks placing 13th overall to earn All-America Second Team honors. Competing in his first NCAA final, Yorks took a shot late in a slow, tactical race but could not outkick the field down the stretch.
The Lakewood, Wash. native was advanced to the finals after taking some punishment in the semifinals on Wednesday. A yellow flag was thrown with 600-meters to go on Wednesday as Yorks was bumped; he was then later knocked to the track and left with some foot pain that made the already difficult national final a little tougher today.
Yorks took a shot, moving up into the top-10 with 300-meters left, but dropping back at the end to finish in a time of 3:56.76. First-place was less than two seconds ahead of Yorks in the packed field, as Chad Noelle of Oklahoma State won in 3:54.96, the slowest winning time in meet history.
“The wind was pretty bad, so we figured it would go slow because of that and there was not much danger of getting left back as long as I keep my eyes up and watch people,” said Yorks on the race strategy. “I don't want to say I didn't have that extra gear, but I wasn't able to access it this time. That's rough, but that's how it was today.
“I have no reason not to be proud of my season,” said the Pac-12 Champ. “I threw up some good times and had some good races. First time running in a finals (at NCAAs). So everything indicates progress.”
The last Husky at nationals will be sophomore Maddie Meyers, as she runs the 5,000-meters on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. live on ESPN2.
