EUGENE, Ore. – The 2015 season came to a close for the Huskies today, as sophomore Maddie Meyers raced in the 5,000-meters final at Hayward Field in the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Meyers had a tough day in her first outdoor national championship appearance, finishing 21st overall to earn All-America honorable mention.
The run for Meyers brings the 2015 track and field season to a close for the Dawgs, though some athletes may go on to compete throughout the summer including at the USA Championships from June 25-28 back in Eugene.
“Maddie just didn't have her best day today, which was a surprise considering how great of a season she's had since the first day of cross country in the fall. She had one of the best seasons any Husky distance runner has enjoyed, even though today did not go as we hoped,” said Head Coach Greg Metcalf.
Meyers, third at Pac-12s in both the 1,500-meters and the 5,000-meters, went out well through the first mile, and continued to look solid as the pack started to string out, sitting at the back of the lead pack in 11th-place. But her splits began to slow and the chase pack caught up with Meyers and she was unable to go with them. She came to the finish in a time of 16:44.94.
The year for Meyers included cross country All-America honors in the fall and All-Pac-12 First Team honors, then an All-America First Team honor indoors as the anchor for the DMR, and Second Team honors in the 3,000-meters indoors.
“The week as a whole was a solid one,” said Metcalf. “Curtis Clauson started us off with a great effort in the javelin to close a fantastic stretch of meets for him. Kristina Owsinski broke our pole vault record to finish fourth, and Coach Licari has had some of the best pole vaulters in the country. Gianna Woodruff closed out her career with a PR, she is an incredible young woman who is going to go on to do great things. Then we had Izaic in his first final yesterday, unfortunately he wasn't able to run at his best, but he's had a heck of a season.
“We only graduate Gianna from this group so next year the cupboard is very full,” said Metcalf. “The challenge for our group is who is going to be that Curtis Clauson or that Kristina Owsinski next season, that athlete who has been on the verge but then does what it takes to break through and get to this meet and get on that podium.”
The Husky women's team wound up 42nd overall with five points, provided by Owsinski's fourth-place finish in the pole vault.
