UW Blanks Utah, 4-0, to advance at Pac-12 Championships

OJAI, Calif. – The sixth-seeded University of Washington men's tennis team blanked seventh-seeded Utah in the opening round of the Pac-12 Championships Wednesday afternoon at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif. The Huskies advance to the quarterfinals where they will face No. 3 seed UCLA on Thursday, April 23 at 3 p.m. PT.
Washington, currently ranked No. 61 nationally, moves to 13-10 overall and have now won three of its last four outings. Additionally, the Huskies advanced out of the First Round of the league championships for the third time since the Pac-12 switched to the team format in 2012.
UW opened the day by taking the doubles point despite Utah winning the first match on court two. Jake Douglas and Wendell Watanabe responded with a swift 8-2 victory on court three, for their third-straight win. Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke would clinch the point for UW as the 57th-ranked duo in the country earned a hard-fought 8-6 decision on court one.
It was smooth sailing for the Huskies once singles play got underway as all three of UW's wins came in straight-sets. Egger got the action started with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Matt Cowley at number three singles for his third win in the last four outings.
Freshman Jake Douglas was quick to follow as he earned a 6-1, 6-3 win against parker McGuiness on court two to move his team-best record to 22-4. Gal Hakak closed out the day, drilling home a 6-2, 6-1 effort on court four for his 15th win of the year.
The Huskies next face UCLA, who defeated UW 6-1, in Los Angeles on March 28.
