Season-Bests In Vault And Sprints Cap L.A. Swing
April 19, 2015 | Track & Field
WALNUT, Calif. – The Husky track and field squad wrapped up a productive weekend motoring around the greater Los Angeles area, with most of the Dawgs setting up shop at the Mt. SAC Relays. A big clearance from Diamara Planell Cruz in the invitational pole vault and more strong sprint times have the Huskies returning home with plenty of momentum.
Planell Cruz had not competed since the outdoor opener back on Mar. 21, but got right back into her groove. She cleared a new outdoor personal-best of 14-1 ¼, and took shots at a potential school record of 14-5 ¼. That mark now puts her into a tie once again with junior teammate Kristina Owsinski on the top-10 list, at No. 3. The two were tied for a time during the indoor season as well. Owsinski today had a first attempt make at 13-9 ¼ but went out at the next bar.
All-American Jax Thoirs cleared a couple bars in the men's invitational, making 17-0 ¾ on his first attempt and 17-6 ½ on his second, but missed on 17-10 ½.
Senior Gianna Woodruff worked her way to a season-best in the 400-meter hurdles invite, running 58.50 seconds to take 10th overall and third among NCAA athletes.
A handful of sprinters made their way to the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State at Cerritos College. Kennadi Bouyer, Haley Jacobson, Lucas Strong, and Jacopo Spano all ran the fastest 100-meters of their careers, but a few came with some wind assistance. Jacobson had the one wind-legal time, cutting two hundredths off her PR with a time of 11.75 seconds. Bouyer ran a career-best 11.70, but had to frown at the wind gauge, as the +2.1 reading was just barely over the limit, or that time would have moved her to fifth in school history. Strong raced to a wind-aided time of 10.67 seconds, and Spano clocked 10.71.
A couple marks came in Friday night from the Bryan Clay Invite that were not reported yesterday included a new top-10 mark, as Alanna Coker and Jaleecia Roland had season-bests in the triple jump. Coker went 40-4 ¾ to move to a tie for the No. 9 spot in Husky history, while Roland was just an inch off her PR with a jump of 39-5 ¾.
