Women Take Second In Drake Relays 4x1600 Battle
April 24, 2015 | Track & Field
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Huskies began their second straight trip to the historic Drake Relays with a pair of title defenses this evening in the 4x1600-meter relays at Drake Stadium. The four Husky women ran nearly ten full seconds faster than their victory in 2014, but were just edged out by Oklahoma State which won in a meet record time.
Last season, Washington captured both the men's and women's 4x1600m relays, going on to win four total relay titles. A year ago, the women won the four-mile battle in a time of 19:09.31. Eleanor Fulton and Katie Knight returned from that squad, joined by Maddie Meyers and Baylee Mires.
Fulton opened, keeping the Huskies in the lead pack, then handed to Knight who had UW in second-place passing to Meyers. The sophomore had the best split at 4:38 to take the lead with Mires anchoring. It came down to the wire, with Oklahoma State finishing a few strides ahead, 18:58.11 to 18:59.38. OSU broke the meet record of 18:58.82, with the Dawgs just half a second off that mark as well. Third-place Iowa State was well back in 19:23.90.
In the men's race, the Huskies went with Meron Simon, Johnathan Stevens, Keith Williams, and Izaic Yorks. Simon opened the win last year and Yorks closed then as well. Simon started well, putting the Huskies in third-place, but the Huskies dropped back before a 3:58 close from Yorks moved them back into the top-half of the 17-team race. Yorks crossed in eighth-place, finishing up in 16:42.38.
The Dawgs will also contest the 4x800-meters and distance medley relays over the next two days at Drake.
