March 28, 2015 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The No. 56 University of Washington men's tennis team lost just its sixth match of the year as it fell 6-1 to No. 6 USC Friday afternoon at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles. The Huskies move to 10-6 overall and 0-1 in Pac-12 action.
Washington shined in doubles play clinching the point behind a pair of big wins. First, the duo of Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke pulled out a 6-4 victory over the No. 3 doubles pair in the country in Yannick Hanfmann and Roberto Quiroz. Freshman Jake Douglas and sophomore Wendell Watanabe followed that up with a well-fought 7-5 decision on court three to give UW the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Huskies battled hard in singles action with three of the six matches going to three sets. USC won the first two matches on courts two and three as No. 114 Eric Johnson defeated Jake Douglas, 6-3, 6-2 and No. 19 Roberto Quiroz outlasted Gal Hakak 6-2, 6-2. Newly ranked Mitch Stewart, who came in at No. 89 this week, took on ninth-ranked Yannick Hanfmann, who came out with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court one.
The final three matches of the day all went to three sets as No. 35 Johnny Wang defeated Joao Barra, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the match at the number five spot. Emmett Egger's match on court four against No.66 Max de Vroome was the closest of the day as de Vroome won the first set 7-6 (6) before Egger rallied for a 7-5 win in set two. De Vroome was able to take the win though in the tiebreaker with a 10-7 advantage.
Closing out the day for UW was Jeff Hawke at number six singles. Hawke fell behind 7-5 after the first set but responded with a 6-2 victory in the second before eventually falling 6-4 in the third giving USC the 6-1 win.
The Huskies continue their tough stretch of three-ranked opponents on the road as they face No. 15 UCLA on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Los Angeles.
