March 29, 2015 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The 56th-ranked University of Washington men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 15 UCLA on Saturday wrapping up a tough three-game road stretch against ranked opponents in California. The Dawgs move to 10-7 on the season and 0-2 in Pac-12 action.
UCLA opened the day winning the doubles point behind 6-3 and 6-1 wins on courts one and three, respectively. Joseph Di Guilio and Karue Sell outlasted Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke at the top of the lineup while Gage Brymer and Martin Redlicki defeated Jake Douglas and Wendell Watanabe, 6-1 on court three. UW's duo of Viktor Farkas and Joao Barra were knotted up at 5-all on court two against Dennis Mkrtchian and Austin Rapp before the Bruins clinched the point.
Joao Barra led the Dawgs in singles play as he picked up UW's lone point with a three-set win over Austin Rapp on court five. Barra dropped his first set 5-7 but bounced back with a 6-2 win in set two and took the 10-point tiebreaker 10-6 to earn his first win at the number five spot since March 1. He is now 6-5 on the season and 2-2 playing on court five. Senior Emmett Egger also took his match to three sets as he rallied for a 6-3 win in set two before falling 6-2 in the final set to give UCLA the point.
The Dawgs return home after three-straight road matches to host No. 30 California on Friday, April 3 and No. 43 Stanford on Sunday, April 5 at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. Both matches will be live streamed on GoHuskies.com with Lee Radovanich serving as the play-by-play commentator.
