EUEGNE, Ore. – No. 13 Washington and No. 4 Arizona State battled all day at the Duck Invitational at the Eugene Country Club, but in the end it was the Sun Devils that made the shots to capture the tournament title. The Huskies settled for second at 5-over for the week, six shots back of Arizona State as the two teams separated from the rest of the field.
“It was a good week for us,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “Arizona State is a great team and we had a good shot at them today.”
No. 28 San Diego State finished third at 15-over, followed by host and No. 8 Oregon at 20-over. The Dawgs finished the final round at 1-under, best of the day other than ASU and SDSU who were each 4-under. The Sun Devils used a hot finish to get to 1-under for the championship and hang on for the win.
“We just ran out of steam a little bit at the end,” said Thurmond. I am most happy with how we competed and that all six of our guys finished 22nd or better.”
It was the Huskies third top-three finish of the year and their sixth inside the top four. This week, the Dawgs did it with depth as all five players finished in the top-25 and had their scores used at some point in the tournament.
Frank Garber led the Huskies with his best finish as a collegian. The freshman closed with an impressive round of 1-under 71 to finish tied for fifth overall. Garber opened by birdying four of his first eight holes and finished the tournament at 1-over 217.
Behind Garber were Cheng-Tsung Pan and Corey Pereira who tied for 11th. The two players that shared the win last week at the Lamkin San Diego Classic finished neck and neck once again. Pereira closed well with a final round of 1-under 71, while Pan was at 1-over 73. Both finished at 3-over 219 for the week.
The other score to be used in the final round came from freshman Jordan Lu who posted a round of even-par 72. Lu climber to a tie for 22nd for the week at 6-over 222, making five birdies on Tuesday.
Jonathan Sanders entered the day tied for second, but did not show the same form as earlier in the tournament. He finished with a round of 5-over 77 and had his score thrown out. Still, Sanders finished tied for 17th overall based on the Monday's excellent 36 holes. His 54-hole total was 4-over 220.
Chris Babcock also competed for the Huskies, playing as an individual. The junior closed with a round of even-par 72 to finish tied for 22nd at 6-over.
“It was another great week of growth for us and we are excited for what's ahead.”
Next up for the Huskies will be the Redhawk Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, April 6 and 7. The tournament hosted by Seattle U. will be played at Chambers Bay, the site of the 2015 U.S. Open. The tournament includes free admission for those looking to watch collegiate teams preview the course that will be played by the world's best in June.
