LOS CABOS QUERENCIA, Mexico – No. 19 Washington remained in contention at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, finishing the second round with a score of 3-under 281 to sit just four shots off the lead. The Dawgs are alone in fourth at 5-under for the tournament, while No. 12 South Florida leads at 9-under.
“We are right in this thing with a round left, so we are excited for tomorrow,” said head coach Matt Thurmond.
Washington got off to a hot start and led midway through the round, but came back to the field in what is turning into a four-team race for the title in Tuesday's final round. South Florida has a one shot lead over No. 14 Stanford who is at 8-under, while first round leader No. 2 Florida State is third at 6-under, just one stroke better than the Dawgs.
The Huskies got stellar play from their top three players who all finished with rounds in the 60's, but a late hiccup from Frank Garber cost UW the overall lead.
“We had three excellent rounds today, but had to count a big one and that hurt a lot,” said Thurmond. “I like what we've got and how we are playing so I expect good things tomorrow.”
Cheng-Tsung Pan had the round of the day for the Huskies, finishing with a 4-under 67. He made six birdies and just two bogeys on the day to climb into a tie for the overall lead. Pan's 67 was the low round of the day as he now sits in a three-way tie at 7-under with Viraat Badhwar of Stanford and Rigel Fernandes of South Florida atop of the leaderboard.
Pan is not the only Husky with a shot at the individual win, however, as Corey Pereira is alone in fourth just two shots off the lead. Pereira finished with a round of 3-under 68 to get to 5-under as one of just three players to play both rounds in the 60's so far.
Jonathan Sanders also played well on Monday, firing a 2-under 69 to climb to a tie for 14th at even par for the tournament. Sanders made only one bogey on the day to go with three birdies.
The final score of the day to be used was Tyler Salsbury who fired a round of 6-over 77. He played both sides at 3-over, making two birdies on the day. Salsbury is now 16-over for the tournament and tied for 68th.
Garber had a good round going that looked as it would be the Huskies' final score, but instead a quadruple bogey nine on the 15th hole derailed his day. Still, the freshman finished with a 7-over 78 and is tied for 58th heading into the final round.
Tuesday's final round will begin at 8:00 a.m. local time with the Huskies teeing off the first five holes, playing with the other three teams in contention. The four teams within four strokes of each other all in the same groups should provide an exciting finish to the Querencia Cabo Collegiate.
