
Dawgs Second After 36 Holes In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – No. 17 Washington is tied for second after the 36-hole first day of the Lamkin San Diego Classic, finishing at 2-under, but 12 strokes off the lead. The Dawgs opened with a 5-under 283, before a 3-over 291 in the afternoon.
The 29th-ranked Lobos lead at 14-under, while San Diego is tied with Washington in second. No. 24 North Carolina is fourth at 1-under, followed by No. 27 San Diego State at even-par.
Individually, the Huskies are led by Corey Pereira who is tied for second at 4-under. Pereira was solid all day, opening with a round of 3-under 69, before a 1-under 71 in the afternoon. His morning round included a golf rarity with back-to-back eagles on the 16th and 17th holes to get his round from 1-over to 3-under.
Pereira is six shots out of the lead set by Gavin Green of New Mexico who is at 10-under. Green shot a pair of 5-under 67's to build a comfortable lead heading into the final round.
The only player with a better round that Green on the day was Washington senior Cheng-Tsung Pan who opened with a 6-under 66 to take the lead after 18 holes. Pan then faltered in the afternoon with a 3-over 75 to fall back to a tie for fourth at 3-under, but still within striking distance of another title, which would be the seventh of his career and an all-time Husky record.
Also with a solid first day was Jonathan Sanders who is tied for 18th at 1-over. Sanders opened with a 1-over 73 in the morning, before an even-par 72 in the afternoon. He made six birdies and an eagle on the day.
Jordan Lu rounded out the Husky scores with both of his rounds also counting. He shot a round of 3-over 75 to open the day, then backed it up with a 1-over 73. Lu is tied for 37th after making five birdies on Monday.
Kevin Kwon completed the Huskies competing, but struggled and is 84th at 22-over.
In addition to the players in San Diego, five other Huskies played as individuals at the Sacramento State Intercollegiate. Freshman Frank Garber led the way, playing 36 holes at 1-under to sit in fourth, five shots off the lead. Tyler Salsbury is also in the top-10 at 1-over and tied for sixth, while Chris Babcock (+3), Spencer Weiss (+4) and Greg Gildea (+9) also competed.
The Dawgs will be back in action at the San Diego Country Club on Tuesday for the final round. Washington will play with New Mexico as they look to make up the difference and earn the tournament title.
