Huskies Bounce Back, Handle St. Mary's 6-1

SEATTLE - Following their tough 4-3 loss to 36th-ranked Indiana on Saturday, the No. 48 Huskies were able to get back on track with a 6-1 victory over St. Mary's, giving them their eighth home victory of the season Sunday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
In doubles play, the Huskies split the first two matches, with Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke winning a quick 6-3 match at court one, followed by a tough 6-1 loss by Viktor Farkas and Wendell Wantabe at court two. With the doubles point on the line, Jake Douglas and Gal Hakak came through with a 6-3 victory at number three doubles.
“It was nice to see Jake and Gal play well in doubles, and I thought Emmett came out really well,” said Husky head coach Matt Anger. “But I wasn't pleased with how we got down right away on court two. It looked like we were making first serves and putting ourselves in good spots, but we were losing points.”
In singles, Washington started with their foot on the gas and rarely let up all match. Jake Douglas made quick work of Thomas Alexander Hunt at court two, winning 6-2, 6-3, earning him his 14th straight victory, while Gal Hakak put up a solid 6-3, 6-2 victory at court four. Moments later, the Huskies were able to earn their fourth point and seal the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at court six for Rishabh Raman, filling in for a resting Jeff Hawke.
Viktor Farkas rebounded from his doubles loss with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court four, and Joao Barra rounded up the Husky victories with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on court five.
The only drama for the Huskies came at court one, where Emmett Egger dropped a hotly contested match versus Arthur Weber 6-4, 4-6, 11-13, giving St. Mary's their lone point. Egger fell behind 0-3 early in the first set, but was able to rally back and earn the first set win. In the second set, Egger was up 2-1 with the serve, but Weber was able to earn a huge break point and take the set. In overtime, Egger fell behind 2-8 with Weber making some incredible shots. Egger was able to rally again, taking a 10-9 lead, but the comeback fell short in the end.
“The tiebreaker was definitely out of the ordinary with the streaks, the quality shots the opponent hit, and the errors he made to let us get back in it. But I would say early second set was the key there. Really, we let him back, and the guy was capable,” said Anger.
The Huskies will travel to Minneapolis next week to face Minnesota and Drake on March 6-7, and will return home to Nordstrom Tennis Center for a cross-city matchup versus Seattle on March 13 at 4:00 p.m.
