Dawgs Dominate the University of Portland, 6-1
February 21, 2015 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE – The No. 53 University of Washington men's tennis team dominated University of Portland in a 6-1 victory Friday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Dawgs picked up their seventh win and move to 7-1 on the season.
The Huskies picked up the first point of the match, clinching doubles after wins on courts one and two. Seniors Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke won their match handily on court one, in a 6-2 decision to put the Dawgs up one match in the doubles point.
Viktor Farkas and Wendell Watanabe bounced back after last weeks' loss to Tulsa after battling in a back-and-forth match on court two for a 6-4 decision.
Although Joao Barra and Mitch Stewart's match was cut early, it did not go unnoticed. Barra and Stewart were down 0-4 at the start of set, but bounced back to win five straight games. The match was cut short due to UW clinching the point.
“I was very happy with how we came out in doubles. Even at number three when we got down 4-0, we just lost two deuce games, but we came right back winning a couple deuce games and all of a sudden we are back on top 5-4 when Wendell and Viktor clinched.” said head coach Matt Anger
In singles play, the Huskies showed why they are now ranked No. 53 in the nation. The Dawgs took five singles points, with the last singles match ending short. Jake Douglas was the first to put the Huskies on the board in singles play, winning his match 6-1, 6-0 on court three for his 12th straight win. Shortly after Gal Hakak defeated Portland's Mike Pervolarakis 6-3, 6-1.
With the Huskies leading 3-0, the four remaining matches amped up the intensity in the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Stewart and Hawke (who subbed in for Barra) had challenging first sets, both ending in7-5 decisions. Stewart finished his match with a 6-3 decision in his second set, while Hawke won his second set 6-2.
“[Hawke] is one of our guys down there. I just thought it would be good to get him in a match. I wanted him to be ready. He has all the confidence in the world," added Anger.
The last match of the day, which may have been the match to watch, was between UW's Farkas and Portland's Pierre Garcia. Farkas fought the entire two sets, coming on top 6-3, 6-4 to seal the victory for the Huskies. Emmett Egger was the only Husky to drop a point. His match finished in a 6-7, 3-6 decision
The Huskies continue their four-match home stead as they host Indiana at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
