Dawgs Finish 10th At The Prestige At PGA West
February 19, 2015 | Men's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. – No. 19 Washington finished 10th at The Prestige at PGA West, never quite playing up to the team's lofty standards. The Dawgs shot a final round of 3-over 291, which was not enough to contend with a field that included 10 teams ranked in the top-32 in the country.
“It was more of the same for us in the final round,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “It's a great field so if we just play mediocre the other teams will beat us.”
For the week, Washington finished at even-par 864, playing around level par most of the week. No. 25 Arizona State took the team title with a cumulative score of 31-under 833, four shots better than No. 16 Stanford who finished at 27-under. The Cardinal had the round of the day at 20-under, but it was not quite enough to take over the lead. No. 32 San Diego State finished third at 23-under.
“We're a very good team that just didn't have a great week,” said Thurmond. “We prepared and played hard as always, things just didn't line up for us this week. It's a great opportunity to know how we can improve because some teams really killed it out there.”
Individually, Maverick McNealy of Stanford won medalist honors with a total of 15-under 201. He closed with a final round of 8-under 64 to climb into the lead. Xander Schauffele of San Diego State and Jon Rahm of Arizona State tied for second at 11-under.
The Dawgs were led by Cheng-Tsung Pan and Corey Pereira who tied for 21st with four others at 3-under for the week. Pan finished with a 1-under 71 that included four birdies and three bogeys. It was the first time finishing out of the top three for the top-ranked collegian this season. Pereira shot an ever-par 72 with three birdies and three bogeys to also finish at 3-under.
Washington's best round of the day came from Tyler Salsbury, although he was playing as an individual so it did not count towards the team score. Salsbury started with the back nine, making five birdies on that side, including four of the last six holes. He finished with a 3-under 69 to climb to a tie for 33rd at 2-over for the tournament.
Also in that tie for 33rd was Jonathan Sanders at 2-over for the tournament. Sanders finished his final round at 1-over 73 after making two birdies and three bogeys.
The last score kept for the final round was Jordan Lu's 3-over 75. He finished at 12-over for the tournament and tied for 69th.
Frank Garber struggled on Wednesday, shooting an 8-over 80. He fell all the way back to a tie for 63rd after opening with two solid rounds.
The Dawgs will next compete at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, beginning on March 1. The three day tournament will put the Dawgs to the test against another great field.
