LA QUINTA, Calif. – No. 19 Washington was static on the leaderboard at The Prestige at PGA West, shooting a round of 1-under 287 to remain in ninth place after two rounds. The Dawgs are now at 3-under for the tournament that includes an elite field.
“It was a pretty uneventful day for us,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “We had a few big mistakes and not enough birdies overall.”
No. 25 Arizona State has the overall lead at 23-under after the best round of the day, a 14-under 274. The Sun Devils are two strokes up on Oklahoma State who is in second place, while the University of Stirling from Scotland is in third place at 17-under.
“We played mediocre and against this many good teams that will now work,” said Thurmond. “The guys are playing hard, grinding it out and hoping for things to start rolling soon. We just need to keep at it.”
Individually, a pair of Arizona State teammates, Max Rottluff and Jon Rahm share the overall lead at 8-under. They are one shot better than three players tied for third at 7-under. The Dawgs top individual is Corey Pereira who entered the day tied for second, but fell to a tie for 15th after a round of 2-over 74. He is now at 3-under for the tournament after making two birdies, two bogeys and a double.
Tuesday, Washington was led by Cheng-Tsung Pan who climbed to a tie for 20th overall with a round of 2-under 70. He made four birdies and two bogeyss for the day and is now 2-under for the tournament.
Also under par was Jonathan Sanders who finished with a round of 1-under 71. Sanders had his typically solid day, making only one bogey and climbing to a tie for 34th overall at 1-over for the tournament.
Finishing at even par was Frank Garber to stay at 1-over for the tournament. Garber had an up and down front nine that included three birdies, but also two bogeys and a double, before closing with all pars on the back nine. He is now tied for 34th entering the final round.
Finally, Jordan Lu matched Pereria's 2-over 74. He is now 9-over for the tournament and tied for 71st.
Tyler Salsbury also shot a 74, but is playing as an individual and won't count towards to the team total. He made four birdies, but a triple-bogey eight on the 11th hole hurt his overall score. He is now tied for 54th at 5-over for the tournament.
Wednesday will mark the final round of The Prestige at PGA West. The Dawgs will be part of the first tee times that begin at 7:30 a.m. as they try to move up the leaderboard.
