Dawgs Earn Another Road Draw, This Time At Cal
October 12, 2015 | Men's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Washington defense continued to dominate, earning their eighth shutout of the season as the Dawgs tied California 0-0 on Sunday afternoon and Edwards Stadium. Ryan Herman was again stellar in goal, frustrating the Golden Bear offense when they did have chances.
The draw earned Washington another road point just as they got Friday night at Stanford. The Huskies are now 1-1-2 in conference, good for five points, trailing Stanford and Oregon State who have seven apiece.
Sunday, Herman made five saves, including a couple of the spectacular variety in the first half and then a game-saver late in the second overtime. The senior picked up his seventh shutout of the season, but was again bolstered by some excellent defense in front of him. The backline of Justin Fiddes, Justin Schmidt, Quentin Pearson and Luke Hauswirth continues to dominate for the Dawgs.
On the offensive end, it was another frustrating performance as the Huskies had their chances. Henry Wingo led the team with five shots, including one on goal, as the Dawgs totaled 13 shots as a team.
Washington got things going early when Fiddes benefited from some good combination play to get a shot, but it sailed high. Then after Herman came up huge, saving a breakaway, Wingo sent in a great corner kick, but the Husky header was saved by the Cal goalkeeper.
Herman then made his other big save of the first half, before Wingo had his chance on goal. The Washington sophomore combined with Michael Gallagher to get a decent look, although be it from a tough angle.
The last good chance of the first half came on a beautifully whipped in ball from Steven Wright, but Kyle Coffee's header went just over the bar.
After the half, the game became more physical as both teams did not want to give up the go-ahead goal. The Huskies managed just one more shot on goal as it looked to be a fifth 0-0 tie of the season.
Then in the 108th minute Cal had a great chance on goal, but again Herman was there to save the day. Instead of falling on a last-minute golden goal, the Huskies earned the hard-fought road point and stay very much in the Pac-12 conference race.
Washington will be back at in next weekend as they return home to host Oregon State to finish off the first round of games in the conference. The 16th-ranked Beavers come to Husky Soccer Field on Sunday, Oct. 18 for a 5 p.m. kickoff for a game broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
