
Five Huskies Participate In SDSU Tournament

SAN DIEGO – The Huskies finished up play today at the San Diego State Fall Invitational with representatives from San Diego State, UC Irvine, Denver, USC, UCSD, San Diego, Grand Canyon, and Pepperdine also in attendance.
Five Huskies traveled to San Diego, including Joao Barra, Piers Foley, Sebastian Hawken, Kawika Lam and Wendell Watanabe. Play began Friday morning and ran until Sunday, including both singles and doubles matches.
Barra and Foley paired together for doubles losing their opening match, but rebounding with a win in the consolation bracket against Garapedian and Galvao of Pepperdine 6-2. Also in doubles, Watanabe and Lam won two matches to reach their flight's doubles championship but fell 6-4 to Poon and Marquard of UCI.
"It was great to see some returners and freshman in a competitive enviorment," said associate head coach Chris Russell. "We saw some very promising play that will become more consistent as we progress through the fall."
In singles play Foley won his first two matches against Galvao of Pepperdine and Tseng of UCSD, before losing to Maroscher of GCU 6-2, 7-5.
Lam lost his opening match but rebounded with a win against Garapedian of Pepperdine 6-4, 7-6 (4). In his singles flight, Watanabe made it to the championship game Sunday and defeated Laser of USC 6-4, 6-2.
"Wendell acted like an upperclassman this weekend and was able to demonstrate how committed he is to really helping this team," said Russell.
